Obligations for businesses with 25 or more workers
The Act respecting the official and common language of Quebec, French, amends the Charter of the French Language and strengthens businesses’ obligations regarding the use of French in the workplace and the obligation to serve clients in French.
Businesses with 25 or more workers are required to register with the Office Québécois de la Langue Française (OQLF) and implement a long-term francization plan to promote the use of French in the workplace. All businesses in Quebec must also uphold the fundamental right of workers to perform their work in French.
Businesses with more than 100 workers must establish a francization committee to coordinate the various activities for their workers. These measures ensure that non-French- speaking foreign workers also have access to French-language learning services.
Francisation services offered by the MIFI in the workplace
The Act respecting the official and common language of Quebec, French , also led to the creation of Francisation Québec, the government’s single access point for French language learning and integration.
Francisation Québec is responsible for supporting the francisation of workers within Quebec-based businesses. Businesses wishing to promote French language learning during paid working hours can obtain information or request training by submitting a support request via their profile on the Arrima platform.
